Max Verstappen (Red Bull) has won a thrilling F1´s United States GP 2022 this Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas. The Dutch champion overtook Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes ) for the win in the final laps after an electrifying chase. 

Charles Leclerc finished in third from a starting twelfth place. His teammate and poleman Carlos Sainz, on the other hand, was knocked out of the race in the first corner after a light touch with George Russell ( Ferrari).

With his 13th victory after Saudi Arabia, Emilia-Romagna, Miami, Spain, Azerbaijan, Canada, France, Hungary, Belgium. Holland, Italy & Japan, Verstappen has equalled Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher’s record of 13 wins in one season and earned the 2022 constructors’ title for the Austrian team; a befitting tribute to Red Bull’s owner and patron, who passed away this Saturday. 

The Texan race had all of the ingredients of a great show; two safety cars, a frightful accident between Fernando Alonso (Alpine) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) – both drivers were unharmed – as well as two pit stops per team as a result of the high rate of tire degradation.  

Poleman Sainz crashes at the star and Max takes the lead  

Sainz lost his first starting position in the opening meters of the United States Grand Prix 2022 to Verstappen, who was then followed by Hamilton, Stroll and Russell. But the worst was yet to come for the Spaniard when, in the second corner, he was hit by the latter and had to abandon the race for the second GP in a row. 

From the tenth lap onwards, Max broke away from Hamilton accruing a 3.5s advantage, while Russell was running 6.7s behind his Mercedes teammate. The race then stabilized until lap 13, when Hamilton made his first pit stop to mount hard compounds (2.9 seconds). The move was replicated in the next lap by Verstappen (2.6 seconds).

On resuming the race, the Dutchman escaped from Hamilton again but shortly after, on lap 22, there was a serious accident. Alonso had crashed into the rear of Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin, fortunately, both drivers were uninjured. 

Four laps later and the battle restarted again on lap 26, with everyone in the same position. Max was off again immediately, quickly opening up a 1.8s distance with Hamilton. Leclerc had jumped to third place after overtaking the Mexican driver in a second attempt on lap 30.

Max loses the lead after a bad pit stop  

Realising that he couldn’t keep up with Max’s pace, Hamilton tried to undercut him with a second pit stop to mount hard compounds on lap 35. Just one turn later, Max followed suit but a very bad stop by Red Bull (11.1 seconds), made him lose his lead and sent him all the way down to fifth place behind Leclerc.

‘Mad Max’, fast & furious chasing Hamilton

Furious by the mistake in the pits, Max executed a great move to pass the Monegasque in a second attempt on lap 39 and then, he began his merciless pursuit of Hamilton. With every lap, he was cutting ground until he had pulverized 3.2 seconds with six laps remaining. In the end, he managed to hunt him down and make history with his 13th victory of the season. A defeated Hamilton followed him in second ahead of Leclerc, third.
