Mexican F1 GP 2021: Verstappen asserts its authority over Hamilton and a legendary Perez

Max Verstappen has taken a dominant and critical nine win of the season at the Mexico F1 GP2021 last Sunday at the Hermanos Rodriguez racetrack. Behind the Dutchman, who has dealt another tough blow to the title race, concluded his rival for the crown, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).

The Briton, however, managed to keep his head above the water and hold an unstoppable Checo Perez (Red Bull) at bay. The local hero, for his part, made history after becoming the first Mexican F1 driver to claim a podium finish on home soil.

Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) also put out a great performance for fourth place. The Frenchman has been able to set such a consistent pace to get ahead of both Ferraris. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have in fact been unable to get near him.

The Scuderia first sent its young Monegasque driver in the hunt for Gasly but, as this failed on his mission, the Spaniard was ordered to get ahead and take over the hunt.

The #55 managed to get closer to the Frenchman but not quite enough to attempt a pass and so he gave back the place to his teammate. His race was largely determined by the melee that formed on the first curve following Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren) brush with Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) while Yuki Tsusonda (Alpha Tauri) and Mick Schumacher (Haas) hit Sebastian Ocon (Alpine).

The Italian team, who had great expectations for its individual drivers ahead of this weekend, leaves Mexico with a bittersweet taste in its mouth. As a team, however, it has been a very positive round for the Maranello Squad (268,8 points) having accrued a thirteen point and a half advantage over their McLaren (255 points) rivals for third place in the Constructors’ Championship

Meanwhile, the great disappointment of the day was pole holder Bottas, who fell to the back of the pack after his initial incident with Ricciardo. He was in any case, able to snatch the fastest lap point from Verstappen, even if that meant having to pit twice during the final stretch of the Mexican GP 2021.

In sum, Red Bull has taken a gigantic leap forward in their bid to conquer both the Drivers and Constructors’ titles. Verstappen (312,5 points) has stretched his lead from 12 to 19 points over Hamilton (293,5 points) and Red Bull (478,5 points) is now just one point away from the German team (477,5 points).

All in all, a perfect Sunday for the Milton Keynes’ squad, where their RB16B has demonstrated to be far superior to the W12. Max has in fact dominated the race from beginning to end. After sustaining a considerable blow at the classification round, Red Bull reasserted its superiority on Sunday.

Mercedes’ fight for its record eighth title is becoming increasingly complicated. A bad start from Bottas and the worst performance of their silver arrow has prevented them on this occasion from fighting for the win despite starting from first and second place.
