How much will F1 teams have to pay to race in 2021?

FIA has released an update of 2021 F1 registration fees registration fees so each of the ten teams on the grid now knows exactly how much they will have to pay in order to compete in the next World Championship.

To start, each Scuderia will have to disburse a fixed fee of $569,308. To that amount, each team will then have to add $6,830 for each point accrued at the 2020 Manufacturers Championship. Both figures have suffered an increase of 2.3 per cent compared to the previous year to represent the rate of inflation in the US.

The outbreak of the pandemic and the subsequent shrinking of the season’s calendar, which went down from the initially planned 22 to only 17 races has translated into fewer overall points to account for, and a reduction in the registration money.

The cancellation of those five races has caused a reduction of nearly three million dollars on the income that the FIA gets from registration fees; 2,837,130 to be precise.

Mercedes: The champion contributor

For yet another year and after winning its seventh consecutive title, Mercedes will top the list of greatest contributors to the FIA’s coffers , now with 2021 F1 registration fees. However, and despite this privilege, its bill will be less than in 2019. Mercedes, just as most other teams, scored fewer points in 2020 as a result of the reduced number of races in the year.

The German team has taken a total of 573 points during the 2020 Constructors’ World Championship, compared to the 739 of the previous season. Their fee for being able to defend their crown next year will thus go down from 5.49 million dollars to 4.48, almost a million less.

Similarly, Ferrari is set to save a good chunk of cash, but in this case due to its very modest results. The Scuderia finished sixth in the standings, their second-worst classification in history to match that of 1980.

Their fee will therefore go down from the 3.36 million dollars paid after finishing second in 2019 to 2.7 million after their 2020 results. Also, Haas and Alfa Romeo, the other two teams using engines from Maranello, will enjoy a sharp drop in their rates of over $100,000 each.

On the other hand, some of the teams of the midfield such as McLaren, Racing Point, Renault and Alpha Tauri, will have to pocket a sharp increase in their bills compared to 2019 after having improved their results significantly during the 2020 World Championship campaign.

The pink formation, for instance, will have to pay twice as much as the year before, going from the $962,000 they had to hand in in order to compete in 2020 to the $ 1.9 million they will be billed for next season.

Meanwhile, Williams, the big losers of 2020, will have the dubious honour of not having to pay a penny for points after having accrued none at all this year.

Below is the registration fee that each team will have to pay in order to take part in the 2021 F1 World Championship.
