Piquet vs Senna 1986: “A loop with a Boeing 767” 

The first edition of the Hungarian Grand Prix held on August the 10th 1986, bequeathed us one of the  best overtakes in Formula 1 of the twentieth century.

Twice champion, Piquet (1981, 1983), launched into a desperate chase after pole-holder Senna. Their intense Formula 1 battle reached its peak at twenty-two laps to the finish line. In the end, Nelson managed to find, or perhaps more accurately, to invent, a space through.

The best first lap in history: Senna, European Gran Prix 1993

The changeable British weather had everyone guessing at the European Grand Prix of 1993 as to which tyres to mount. The intermittent rain over Donington Park Circuit kept the uncertainty and nervousness going.

The race started with Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher ahead of Ayrton Senna who was fourth out. The Brazilian had an unlikely bad start and was soon overtaken by a fiery Karl Wendlinger.

But Senna managed to pass Schumacher in the first corner and soon after he did the same with Wendlinger and Hill. The South American shark had its eyes on the most coveted prey: the leader Prost.

In the end, he devoured the Frenchman and took the first position, which he kept until the end having performed some of the best overtakes in Formula 1 to date and the the best first lap in history. 

Alonso, Schumacher and the 130R in Japan 2005 

The 130R bend in the Circuit of Suzuka (Japan) is considered to be one of the fastest and most challenging corners in the world. The smallest of errors can be fatal. It was there at the Japanese Grand Prix of 2005 that Fernando Alonso made a breathtaking pass on Michael Schumacher.

The German legend admitted after the race he had been taken by surprise by the Spaniard since nobody would dare to perform such a risky manoeuvre at that point.

The Spaniard made his legendary pass at 320km/h around the outside of the seven-time, impassable German champion. Everybody think is was one of the  best overtakes in Formula 1. Sure. 

Mansell and Senna, Spain 1991 

The inaugural race at the Catalan Circuit of Montmelo as the venue for the Spanish Grand Prix in 1991 became the backdrop for one of the most vibrant and iconic duels in Formula 1. 

In the end, the Briton lengthened his braking and in an extraordinary move, he passed the Brazilian. Senna would still take his third world title that year but Mansell definitely left us one of the thrilling and best overtakes of Formula 1.

Hakkinen’s double pass in Belgium in 2000: The best overtake

Last but not least we bring you a true masterpiece in the art of climbing positions on the track. It was the year 2000 at the Spa–Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Mika Hakkinen had conquered both 1998 and 1999’s world titles. On the Ardenas track that year he was engaged in a ruthless struggle with Michael Schumacher. The Finn was stuck to the back of the German driver and attempting to pass him without much success. 

Hakkinen saw his chance at the most unpredictable and dangerous moment. After negotiating the Eau Rouge stream, Schumacher and his Scandinavian pursuer came upon the BAR-Honda of Ricardo Zonta.

The German driver passed Zonta on the left side while the Finn did so simultaneously on the right passing Schumacher on the same move and taking the first place. It was a perfectly choreographed manoeuvre. One of the  best overtakes in Formula 1.
