F1 Austrian GP 2021: Verstappen takes second win at home ahead of Bottas and Norris

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has repeated his crushing victory of last week at the Circuit of Styria. The Dutchman has taken his third consecutive win and fifth of the season at the F1 Austrian GP 2021. This Sunday’s ninth appointment of the calendar has proved to be the ultimate show of strength from the Dutchman and his team. 

Seventeen seconds behind the hypersonic #33 arrived Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes). Lando Norris, third, has snatched his third podium of the season and the fourth of his Formula One career despite having received a five-second penalty following a scrap with Checo Pérez (Red Bull). 

Just outside the places of honour concluded a defeated Lewis Hamilton. A hard blow for the seven-time champion as he witnessed a far superior Max Verstappen taking the coveted ‘Grand Slam’ after by winning from pole, dominating every lap of the race and taking the fastest lap.

 Perez finished in fifth place after suffering a setback at the start of the race when he went off track while battling with Norris for third. The incident pushed him back to tenth place. On top of that, he was given a ten-second penalty for forcing Charles Leclerc off the track on two separate occasions, a sanction which finally demoted him one position below. Carlos Sainz, who arrived behind the Mexican driver, was thus promoted to fifth in the end. 
Following  Ferrari’s bold strategy, the Spaniard started on hard tires and stretched his first pit stop until the 50th lap. That move, together with his great overtaking of Daniel Ricciardo on the last lap, was key to his remarkable result. This is the five consecutive victory (Emilia-Romagna, Monaco, Azerbaijan, France, Styria, Austria) for the team of the energy drink after Emilia-Romagna, Monaco, Azerbaijan, France, Styria but, most importantly, they have demonstrated that they are unbeatable at home and the strongest team on the grid.

At the constructors’ championship, Red Bull has increased its advantage over Mercedes by four points. The team headquartered in Milton Keynes has 286 points against the 242 of the German team. Although everything indicates that a change in the Formula One hierarchy is upon us, it will be prudent to wait for the British GP, Mercedes and Hamilton’s fortress, to confirm the change. At the Drivers´standings, Verstappen has also extended his advantage in the standings from 16 to 32 points and currently treasures 182 points compared to Hamilton’s 150. 

Aided by a very efficient and fast car, the Flying Dutchman is in a great state of form. Proof of this are his three consecutive victories and five overall this season at the front of Red Bull. And for the icing on the cake, his teammate Pérez with his 104 points has ousted Norris (101) from third place.  As for today’s race, it was pretty much a monologue from Verstappen, who gave a dominant performance from start to finish to round up a perfect weekend. His outstanding run even earned him the Grand Chelem.

Mercedes, on the other hand, was powerless before the superiority of the RB16B compared to its W12, but also had to witness how McLaren, with a fantastic Norris at the wheel, has now also become a threat. In two weeks’ time, Mercedes will have its litmus test at the British GP, a stronghold of the German team.
