The Japanese Beast, the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept, has been unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2019 causing a great wave of excitement and applause among the public present at the event. Expectations have been exceeded.
Here to dominate the circuits again
Seventeen years after saying goodbye, the fifth generation of the Japanese model will return to the circuits in 2020 at the Japanese Super GT GT500 Championship to see again the chequered flag.
The Supra took part at that race’s predecessor, the All Japan Touring Car Championship (JGTC), during twelve years during which time the Supra sealed three Driver Titles (1997, Pedro de la Rosa, 2001, Hironori Takeuchi, and 2002, Juichi Wakisaka) and two Team Titles (1997, Toyota Castrol Team TOM’S, and 2002, Esso Ultraflo Team LeMans).
The Toyota Gazoo Racing team has brought all its circuit expertise, such as that acquired at the e24 Hours of Le Mans 2018 and other WEC races, in order to bring back the new Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept to its old glory.
Guided by brand’s founder, Kiichiro Toyoda’s philosophy, engineers have applied their racing experience to the development process of the new car.
The Asian manufacturer has spared no effort or resources in the new car. The Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept incorporates the most advanced technology, systems, components and materials.
Designed to inspire respect in the circuits, the Japanese missile stands out for its athletic figure. Its radical aesthetic includes an oversized rear wing, which is supported form the top, optimising the aerodynamic performance of the car. This, together with the rear diffuser, generate extra downforce and give stability to the rear axle.
There is a generous front splitter and side skirts, as well as louvred air inlets in the front bumpers, all built from extra-lightweight composite material. The windshield and side windows are made of plastic.
The racing chassis also consists of lowered front and rear suspension. BBS racing wheels with centre-nut attachments are fitted with Michelin racing tires. The braking system uses Brembo Racing callipers and discs.
Inside, the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept meets all racing safety standards with a full-roll cage, driver’s seat and safety harnesses and a quick-release steering wheel which is mounted on a racing column.
The GR Supra Racing Concept
The Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept is the circuit version of the new GR Supra. This road version of the model is powered by a BMW, turbocharged 3.0- litre, 6-cylinder engine which can develop up to 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The power unit is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Supra can get from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds making it the fastest production model of the Japanese firm to date. It is fair to assume that the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept will mirror the mechanics of the production model, although no information has been released in this respect yet.
