MotoGP | Aragon: Marc Marquez shakes up the Championship

By H. Mayor – photo: motogp.com | Although nothing is yet set in stone, Aragon will make history this season as the track where the fate of many of the drivers was decided. In this, one of the most contested Championships in recent memory, we have witnessed another exciting and well fought race which culminated with the triumph of Marc Marquez; even more triumphant in comparison to Dovizioso’s unfortunate performance which relegated him to sixth place. The Spaniard now enjoys  a 16 point lead with just four races left in the competition.

Márquez’ podium companions Dani Pedrosa (second) and Lorenzo (third) also gave remarkable performances with the former at his best throughout and the latter’s meteoric start. Valentino Rossi’s achievement was not any less impressive. The Doctor was back after a mere three week recovery from a double leg fracture. What was meant to be an unpretentious test of fitness ended up as an excellent race which got him to fifth position. Once again a display of his exceptional character.

An intense and disputed race

Marc Marquez’ triumph was particularly phenomenal given the intensity and competitiveness of the race. He hadn’t had the best of weeks and despite winning, he was not feeling entirely comfortable throughout the race. He had to battle against Lorenzo’s fast-start and made a few noticeable mistakes, even going off track over bend 12. It was at that same spot that he took over Jorge and managed to contain Pedrosa, Rossi, and even Dovizioso before the latter started slipping down positions.

The triumph at MotorLand gives Marc Marquez something more than 25 points. He has asserted himself as a solid pilot which enters this decisive phase of the championship full of confidence. Someone who can handle difficult situations with finesse and knows when risks are worth taking. Now, with a comfortable 16 point lead to fall back on, he is on a privileged position to negotiate the end of the championship. The pressure is now on Dovizioso, Viñales and even Pedrosa, who despite having disputed a fantastic race also lost points to the leader.
