Pramac Racing’s Spaniard rookie, Jorge Martin, has taken an authoritative maiden Premier Class victory at the MotoGP Styrian GP 2021 this Sunday at the Spielberg circuit in Austria. The Spaniard Joan Mir (Suzuki), and the current championship leader, Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), completed the podium. 

KTM’s South African pilot, Brad Binder, and LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami completed the top five. Johann Zarco, currently second in the standings, concluded one place behind in sixth. 

Visibility uncomfortable during the whole weekend, Martin’s teammate has lost some valuable points against his Yamaha compatriot in the fight for the crown. They are now separated by 40 points.

Ducati´s failure

Unable to fulfill their role of favorites at their Austrian stronghold, the official Ducatis, have been the big losers of the MotoGP Styrian GP 2021. Pecco Bagniaia started in second only to lose nine places for an eleventh position finish but his partner Jack Miller suffered an even worse deal.

The Australian crashed out when he was chasing Quartararo for third place and with just ten laps to go to the checkered flag. On top of the disappointment, the Ducatis have had to deal with the humiliation of witnessing a bike from the same brand, but from a satellite team with a much smaller budget, rise to the top of the podium ahead of them.

Ducati’s dreadful results have also had a negative impact on their position in the standings. Bagnaia is now fourth classified, 58 points behind the leader, while Miller has fallen to fifth place with 72 points less than Quartararo. Worst of all, they have lost third place to Mir, a complete disaster!

Spaniard duel: Martin vs Mir

As for the hero at the MotoGP Styrian GP 2021, the Spaniard from San Sebastián de Los Reyes, Jorge Martin, executed a sensational race. Supported by the reliable speed of his Desmosedici, ‘Martinator’, as he is nicknamed at home, gave a definitive show of strength.

The Spaniard was in control from his pole start until he crossed the finish line, despite coming under immense pressure from an also sensational Joan Mir.

After a half-hour hiatus, when the race had to be interrupted following an accident between Dani Pedrosa and Lorenzo Savadori, Both Mir and Martin engaged in a wheel-to-wheel showdown that lasted until the finishing laps. 

Despite Mir’s fierce attack, Martin kept his cool throughout and his constant high pace finally allowed him to open some distance with his uncomfortable travel companion in the final part of the test. The 23-year-old rider has achieved an incredible feat at his seventh MotoGP race.

Martin’s feat is even more remarkable considering he had to retire in Assen, still hurting from the injuries he endured at his brutal accident in Portugal where he broke seven bones. He decided to return to the competition while still convalescing from a triple operation in the Netherlands.

But at his first attempt back on the track he was left both physically and mentally exhausted by the pain. As true heroes do, however, he has come back from his ordeal toughest and more determined than ever to show the world what he is made of. He is undoubtedly at the doors of Premier Class glory.

Great performance of Mir

Mir also played a prominent role at the MotoGP Styrian GP 2021. The Suzuki pilot kept up the struggle with Martín, until the very end when he just couldn’t compete anymore with the overwhelming determination of his compatriot.

Mir is however on a clear ascending trajectory after taking his fourth podium of the season Portugal, Italy, Holland & Styria) and the second consecutively after the Netherlands.

This latest result has propped him up to third place in the standings with 121 points, ahead of Bagnaia, now fourth, by seven points. Although still a considerable 51 points behind the leader, Mir is exhibiting the same consistency, that gave him the title in 2020. 

Everything remains very open at the MotoGP World Championship 2021 although ‘El Diablo’ is in a great state of form and maturity. The French leads the Overall with  172 points, 40 ahead of his compatriot Johann Zarco.
