Italian MotoGP Preview: Hostile territory for Marquez

The World Motorcycling Championship arrives at the Mugello circuit this weekend (May 31-June 2) for the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix and sixth appointment of the calendar. This is Ducati’s home race with their factory a mere 90 km away from the track.

As far as records go, Marc Márquez (Honda) set in 2013 the fastest in-race lap, stopping the clock at 1: 47.639 seconds. National hero, Valentino Rossi (Yamaha), sealed in 2018 the quickest lap in qualifying with a time of 1: 46.208. Another local, Andrea Dovizioso and his Ducati, got the maximum speed record with 356,5 km/h in the last campaign.

Il Dottore, however, remains to date the most successful pilot in his country’s GP with a total of 9 wins, 7 in MotoGP (2002-2008), one in 250 cc (1999) and another one in 125 cc (1997).
