Fernando Alonso, still fresh from his adventure in 24 Hours of Daytona 2019, seems to have a new proposal on the table: to compete in NASCAR by the hand of Toyota.
David Wilson, general director of the racing division of the Japanese firm in the United States spoke of this possibility after witnessing the two-time F1 champion’s exhibition in the legendary race.
“Although he did not compete with us, what Fernando did at Daytona was awesome”. In fact, Wilson then specifically said that he will try to convince Alonso to run “some Nascar races with Toyota”.
Given the chance, Wilson is convinced that Alonso “would be very interested“ in such venture. Not only that, but Toyota’s general director has also insinuated the circuits in which this could become a reality: “Sonoma or Watkins Glen would be great”.
The executive explained in a statement for Autosport magazine: “Alonso was at the presentation of the Toyota Supra in Detroit with our WEC team (World Resistance). We had dinner with him there one night, he’s looking at the entire horizon – I don’t think there’s anything that’s not a possibility for Fernando. Who knows? It would be great for business”.
In any case, it would not be the first time that Alonso gets behind the wheel of a NASCAR car. After saying ‘see you later’ to Formula 1 at the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi in 2018, the Spaniard exchanged his single-seater with the Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson.
The performance of the Spaniard at the Bahrein Circuit left the seven-time NASCAR champion truly impressed. There is no doubt that the US market has welcomed Alonso with open arms. He is very popular with the public and is very respected by his American colleagues.
This is going to be the first F1 season without Fernando Alonso in 17 years, whose main goal of 2019 is conquering the Indianapolis 500 in May. If he wins that would grant him the Triple Crown of Motorsports, an honorary title only achieved by Briton Graham Hill before. Before tackling that challenge, however, Alonso has other important appointments on his agenda.
He will try on the Toyota Hilux with which Nasser Al-Attiyah was proclaimed Dakar champion this year. The Qatari will act as host and instructor. The Spaniard is also hoping to conquer the World Endurance Championship which he curently leads with Toyota.
To do so, he must really shine at the three remaining races; the 1,000 Miles of Sebring (March 16-17), the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (May 4) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 15-16).
Alonso continues with his ambition to become the most complete driver in history, and to do so, he must get to the top of several disciplines of Motorsport.
