The organizers of the Rally of Finland, scheduled for 6 to 9 August, have announced this Wednesday its cancellation due to the current situation caused by the coronavirus crisis.
With this news, the return of the World Rally Championship, precisely scheduled for the Nordic round, remains in the air. By the way, the Rally of New Zealand, the next stop in this unusual 2020 world championship, has also just been canceled.
In theory, the next stop on the calendar, the Rally of Turkey (September 24-27), would be the stage for the resumption of a WRC paralyzed since March 14 by the pandemic.
Although in Finland restrictions on movement had been eased earlier than in other countries, the organizers of the event are aware that the current international situation would make the development of the event very difficult in just two months.
It should be remembered that only Monte Carlo, Sweden and Mexico Rallys have been held in this year, the latter ended a day earlier than expected due to the worsening of the pandemic situation.
To date, the coronavirus has already forced the cancellation of commitments in Portugal, Italy, Kenya and Finland and, finally, New Zealand. Meanwhile, Chile and Argentina remain temporarily suspended pending a decision.
