The Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT team will compete in the 2021 World Rally Championship with its current Yaris WRC. This has been officially announced this Monday by the Puupula formation through a brief message on Twitter.
In the publication, Tommi Makkinen’s team has reported that the development of the GR Yaris with which they planned to run next season will serve for the development of their 2022 vehicle, the year that will mark the birth of the hybrid era in the specialty.
“Our plan is to continue improving the current Yaris WRC and compete with it in 2021“, explained the Japanese structure.
“Before COVID-19 broke, we collected a lot of valuable information from testing when we were developing the GR Yaris (street) and the WRC version. Now we will take this knowledge and use it to design a car that meets the 2022 regulations.
Finally we are able to resume testing and hit the gravel roads of Finland today with the #YarisWRC!#Toyota #ToyotaGAZOORacing #WRC pic.twitter.com/biIMz7OVXc

“With gratitude to all who work in the medical field to combat the virus, we will do our best to achieve the best results.”
The GR Yaris was built knowing that its competitive life would be limited to a single campaign, before the Rally1 regulations came into force in 2022. However, the operational difficulties derived from the pandemic have caused this model to be retired without contesting a single race.
Now we will take this know-how and use it to design a car for the 2022 regulations.
With gratitude to everyone working in the medical field to fight the virus, we will make every effort to achieve the best results.#Toyota #YarisWRC #ToyotaGAZOORacing
