Hyundai Motorsport released yesterday, November 19, its line-up for Rally Monza. The seventh and final round of the World Rally Championship will be held in Italy from December 3 to 6.
Along with the two main driver pairs; the Estonians Ott Tänak and Martin Jarveoja, and the Belgians Thierry Neuville and Nicolas, the South Korean team has lined up Spaniards Dani Sordo and Carlos del Barrio to pilot the third i20 Coupe WRC.
Both Sordo and del Barrio will take part in the final battle for the constructor’s title in Lombardy. Currently, the team from Alzenau leads the standings with 208 points, only seven more than Toyota. Such equality means everything is still very much in the air as teams head to their final duel, especially considering that the two squads will be bringing their greatest assets into the battlefield.
The presence of the Spaniards at the Italian race has been interpreted as a gesture of confidence from Andrea Adamo, sports manager of the Asian team:
“ACI Rally Monza will be obviously a very important event for Hyundai Motorsport as we will be fighting to win our second WRC manufacturers’ title (…) Among our drivers I decided to line up Dani in ACI Rally Monza. If we look at the characteristics of the rally, he can achieve a good result and help the team in achieving the title” – explained Adamo.
After Sordos’ win in Corsica, the Hyundai boss trusts the driver’s consistency and state of form. On top of this is the successful and extensive experience of the Spaniard at the Monza Rally Show. Sordo has two victories to his name at the ‘Temple of Speed’, one in 2010 and the other in 2013, and has taken second in 2016 and 2019.
