Honda’s Marc Marquez wins Dutch GP

By T.C. / Photo: www.marcmarquez93.com/ Marc Marquez took the win at the Dutch Grand Prix this past Sunday in what has been described as the most thrilling race of the season. With him at the podium of the TT Assen circuit were pilots Álex Rins from Suzuki and Viñales from Yamaha; an all-Spanish podium not seen since the AragónGP last year.

The unexpectedly high winds meant pilots had to change their strategy and kept tightly bunched throughout, making it very difficult to escape solo. Overtaking was rife with over a hundred different changes of position in total, making this one of the most fun to watch and exciting races in a very long time, as well as one of the slowest.

At a race where the most important thing was to hold tight, keep your position and take little risks, results only got decided in the last few laps. In the end, there were only 4,462 seconds between the winner and the pilot in seventh position. “It was a crazy race especially in the straight with lots of wind” Márquez declared, “I decided to wait, everybody had contact with everybody. I tried to manage my tyres. In the last three laps, I pushed with everything.”

Márquez, Crutchlow and Rossi started at the lead but Ducati’s Jorge Lorenzo soon managed to catch up and pass everyone in front of him leading the race for a while. The fighting then continued on at every single lap with three head changes per lap on average and with pilots driving very close to each other. In one of this close overtakings, Rossi bumped into Marquez who almost loses his balance at over 125 mph.

Marquez had to wait for the right moment to break away and he did so at just three laps from the finish line. It proved to be the right call as he won the race at 2,269 seconds ahead of the next driver achieving his fourth victory of the season. Álex Rins’ second position is also the best result of his career.

This victory widens the Spaniard’s advantage in the standings having now 140 points followed by Valentino Rossi with 99 and Maverick Viñales with 93. The next race will be at the Sachsenring circuit for the German Grand Prix on the 15th of July, a circuit in which Marquez has always won in the past.
